Sundae goes cherry picking

The day started like most Sundays, with Sundae snoring upside down on the living room rug, her legs pointed to the ceiling like furry antennae. But this Sunday was different. I jingled the car keys and announced, “Sundae, we’re going cherry picking today!”

Her eyes snapped open. She flailed, rolled off the rug, and landed in a dignified sitting pose as if to say, "Finally, something worthy of my time." Within minutes, she was buckled into her car seat. It had a pink harness designed for “small but determined dogs.” She sat patiently, sniffing the air like a seasoned explorer.

The orchard was only fifteen minutes away, but Sundae howled like we were crossing the Alps. The second I parked, she leapt out with the force of a spring-loaded meatball. Rows of cherry trees stretched out like green tunnels, heavy with red jewels. Families wandered up and down, baskets in hand. Children darted between trees, faces already stained pink.

“She can pick cherries?” the farm attendant asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Sundae can sample cherries,” I corrected.

Sundae trotted ahead, pink collar gleaming, dog tag jingling: Sundae. When we passed the "You-Pick Entrance," she zeroed in on a low-hanging branch, reared up, and snapped a cherry off like a professional food critic. She chewed thoughtfully.

Approved.

As I filled a basket, Sundae developed her method. She would sit beneath a tree, gaze upward dramatically, and whine softly until some sympathetic child would lower a cherry to her like an offering to a tiny, round-bellied goddess.

By the fourth tree, she had a fan club. Three kids followed her with plastic pails, cooing and calling her Cherry Queen. One even tied a napkin around her neck like a royal cape.

“Sundae, stop grifting,” I whispered. She responded by flopping over dramatically, exposing her belly and letting a cherry roll into her fur like it was her crown jewel.

Things were going fine until Sundae spotted The Ladder.

Someone had left a small step ladder beneath a towering tree loaded with the ripest cherries. Sundae’s eyes narrowed like a heist movie mastermind. She darted forward, scrambled up the first step, and launched herself heroically toward a dangling cluster before I could grab her. She got one, but gravity, as always, had notes.

She landed in a bucket of cherries with a splat, sending fruit flying everywhere. Kids shrieked, adults gasped, and a woman took a photo.

Sundae stood tall in the bucket, tongue out, two cherries hilariously balanced behind her ears like earrings. She wagged once, victorious.

The farm attendant approached, looking serious. I braced for scolding. Instead, he chuckled and said, “That’s the best marketing we’ve had all summer.”

By the time we left, Sundae had posed for seventeen photos, been awarded the title of Official Cherry Ambassador, and somehow acquired a cherry-patterned bandana from the gift shop. Her fan club waved as we returned to the car, chanting, “Cherry Queen! Cherry Queen!”

That night, back home, Sundae collapsed on the rug, belly full, snoring with a new kind of dignity. Stained pink from cherry juice, with the bandana proudly tied around her neck, she looked like a dog who had conquered not just an orchard but the hearts of everyone within it. As I wiped stray cherry bits off her face, she sighed happily and rolled over, legs skyward again.

Queen Sundae had earned her rest.
